A beach read needs a beach-themed cocktail. Since Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid is set in Malibu in 1983, finding a retro summer cocktail was the first consideration. Upon reading the captivating, heartbreaking and sometimes humorous novel, numerous drinks were mentioned, but one stood out above of the rest–the Sea Breeze.

June, the matriarch of the family, uses alcohol to cope with the stresses in her life. She’s the sole caregiver for four children, her famous husband abandons their family, and she’s back working at her family’s restaurant, which is the last place where she wanted to end up. Although June’s alcoholism leads to her demise, her love and devotion to her children make her an endearing, although tragically flawed, character.
A Sea Breeze cocktail was June’s choice of drink with dinner, a time where she would be with her four children after working all day at her restaurant. This beachy drink, with its beautiful hue and retro summer vibe, is the decided pairing for Malibu Rising as an homage to both June and the book’s setting.
